What is Cowgirl Up!?

In 2005, Sigler Western Museum embraced a revolutionary idea: an annual exhibition showcasing the brightest contemporary female artists working in the Western genre. In the male-dominated world of Western Art, Cowgirl Up! turned the spotlight squarely on women’s voices and perspectives, serving up a new, deeper understanding of the American West. The purchase of original artworks supports the endeavors of women artists working today and of the Sigler Western Museum. CU! art can be bought throughout the run of the exhibition at the Museum or online.

The Cowgirl Up! exhibition is divided into two parts: a gallery of “miniatures” and the Main gallery of full-sized art. Artwork in the Main gallery should remain on display throughout the exhibition and will be available for pick-up or delivery after Memorial Day. 

Selected Artists are highly encouraged to attend "Opening Weekend" typically scheduled for the last weekend in March. 

Selection Committee Submission Information

1. Images of three to ten pieces of your art depicting the Western lifestyle, with the title, medium, size, and asking price noted
2. Your biography/resume 
3. Your artist’s statement
4. Your contact information, including e-mail and web site addresses
5. Other pertinent information you’d like to share

Things to note:

1.  Mediums eligible for the exhibition are painting (oil, acrylic, water media, pastel, egg tempera), drawing, mixed media, and sculpture.  Please, no craft, photography, or prints.
2.  Work submitted for review need not be available for sale. You should submit the best representation of your work.
3.  The minimum sales price for artwork in the event is $3,000, of which the artist receives 65%, the Museum 35%.  Work submitted for the Committee’s review should be at or above that price.  
4.  2D Main Sale artwork should not exceed 48” in width (frame not included). 3D work should not exceed 72” in height including the base and the width should not exceed 48” including the base.
5.  2D Miniature artwork should not exceed 18” in width (frame not included) and 18” in height.
6. If you are selected for the exhibition and sale, you will be asked to submit at least 3 but no more than 5 Main Sale artworks that are new to the Museum and have been executed within the past two years. You may submit up to 6 Miniature Sale pieces.
7.  Some subject matter suggestions: For reasons known only to the buying public and thus changeable on a whim, we have found that snowy mountains, northern wildlife, and portraits of specific individuals (people and animals) do not sell as well in Wickenburg as do traditional Western subjects like working cowboys and cowgirls, horses, and desert landscapes.
